How to read a cross-stitch chart
Start with the legend: connect each symbol to its thread code, and read the designer’s instructions. Similar symbols may represent different colors. A square’s color alone does not tell you how many strands to use. Keep stitch types, thread numbers and strand counts separate in your notes.
Focus on one symbol
Choose a small area you can recognize. Check its coordinates and grid blocks before marking. At a page boundary, look for repeated overlap rows so you do not count the same stitches twice. Compare the app’s suggested symbol matches with the original chart. When a scan or symbol is ambiguous, resolve it before marking a larger group.
